Ciaran Dance Design creates bespoke, handmade lampshades crafted with architectural precision and a deep respect for pattern, colour, and light. Each piece is produced in limited runs, using carefully selected fabrics that transform interiors through sculptural form and warm illumination. Designed and made in London, these lampshades blend craftsmanship with a designer’s eye for detail — unique objects that bring character, artistry, and atmosphere to any space.

With a previous career as an architect, also involved in interior design, I began making lampshades in response to my own frustrations with the retail options available. 

I’ve always been drawn to colour and vibrant patterns, and my range reflects that. They are designed and hand-made by myself. I use a range of fabrics from the African Ankara fabrics, which are synonymous with the character of my neighbourhood in south-east London., through to fabrics from Liberty of London and Kaffe Fassett, plus Japanese and Indian fabrics.

I buy the fabrics in 6-yard (5 metre) runs which means all my lampshades are limited editions of between 10 and 20 shades (depending on shade size).

This means buyers can be sure they will have something that as well as reflecting their style is not produced for a mass market.

My double-sided shades are also designed to give complementary yet contrasting aesthetics when on and off, to contribute to the atmosphere of a room in both states.
