Double-sided ‘The Big Wave’ Japanese cotton lampshade
‘The Big Wave’ is a bespoke lampshade designed using my architectural understanding of illumination and how artificial light interacts with patterned and plain textiles. Handmade using a Japanese fabric referencing the work of artist Katsushika Hokusai, this shade creates a soft, atmospheric light that glows beautifully when illuminated.
Fabric Story This design features the Japanese Big Wave print, chosen for its sweeping curves and striking contrast between deep navy, pale blue, and crisp white. The pattern has a natural sense of movement, and when lit, the wave motif softens into a gentle gradient, giving the shade a calm yet expressive glow.
Lighting Behaviour Paired with its peach lining, 'The Big Wave' responds distinctively when warm bulbs are applied. The peach tone transfers subtly into the white elements of the pattern and softens the pale blue into lilac hues, creating a soothing and relaxing light ideal for living rooms and bedrooms. Cooler bulbs sharpen the edges of the wave pattern, bringing clarity and vibrancy that works beautifully in hallways, studios, or reading corners. Its balanced behaviour makes it adaptable to both ambient and task lighting.
Handmade Craft Each lampshade is handmade in London using traditional making techniques. The exterior pattern is aligned with precision, the interior lining is finished cleanly, and the structure is built to maintain its sculptural form over time. As part of a limited run, every shade carries the individuality of the maker’s hand.
