Double-sided ‘Metropolis’ lampshade

‘Metropolis’ is a bespoke lampshade designed using my architectural understanding of illumination and how artificial light interacts with patterned textiles. Handmade using a Liberty of London fabric, this shade creates a soft, atmospheric light that glows beautifully when illuminated.

Fabric Story This design features a Liberty of London cotton print, chosen for the dystopian feel of the pattern of greys and white which reminded me of a lost city from the early days of science-fiction movies. The pattern is versitile and can take on any internal colour you choose to pair with it, but for me I just had to bring that lost city back to life.

Lighting Behaviour Paired with its acid yellow lining, 'Metropolis' responds by lighting up he whole urban landscape and works best when a warm bulb is used. Cooler bulbs sharpen the edges of the pattern, and alternative inner colours would lead to a softer result and light temperature. Choose your colour depending on where you want to locate your dystopian city.

Handmade Craft Each lampshade is handmade in London using traditional making techniques. The exterior pattern is aligned with precision, the interior lining is finished cleanly, and the structure is built to maintain its sculptural form over time. As part of a limited run, every shade carries the individuality of the maker’s hand.
