Double-sided ‘Cranes In The Sky - Blue’ Japanese cotton lampshade
‘Cranes in the Sky - Blue’ is a bespoke lampshade designed using my architectural understanding of illumination and how artificial light interacts with patterned and plain, coloured textiles. Handmade using a Japanese fabric, this shade creates a soft, enchanting light that glows beautifully when illuminated.
Fabric Story This design features the Japanese Art Deco Cranes print in a blue colourway (compared to the original Cranes in the Sky which has a black colourway), featuring motifs including stylised white cranes with red details and red clouds mixed with embossed gold waves over a deep indigo blue background. The embossed elements react very differently to light than the rest of the fabric.
Lighting Behaviour Paired with its peach coloured lining, ‘Cranes in the Sky - Blue’ responds distinctively when warm bulbs are applied. The peach tone transfers subtly into the white elements of the pattern and softens creating a warm hue to the light, ideal for living rooms and bedrooms.
In contrast the gold embossed areas allow no light through and so show as black when illuminated and the cranes almost stand alone against the background. Alternative colours are available for the inner cotton fabric including pink, beige and ochre.
Handmade Craft Each lampshade is handmade in London using traditional making techniques. The exterior pattern is aligned with precision, the interior lining is finished cleanly, and the structure is built to maintain its sculptural form over time. As part of a limited run, every shade carries the individuality of the maker’s hand.
