‘Ain't No Mountain High Enough’ is a bespoke lampshade designed using my architectural understanding of illumination and how patterned textiles behave when placed inside a shade and exposed to light. Unlike traditional lampshades, ‘Ain't No Mountain High Enough’ reveals its design only when lit, creating a revealing its bold pattern. A modern addition to any room.
Fabric Story This shade features an Ankara printed cotton fabric on the interior, chosen for its rhythmic, graphic lines, and sharp contrasts between the greys and dark reds in the pattern against its cream background. When the lamp is off, the exterior remains calm and understated in a clean, plain, coloured fabric. When illuminated, the interior pattern is transferred through the lining.
Lighting Behaviour Paired with its cream outer face, ‘Ain't No Mountain High Enough’ responds dramatically to warm bulbs, fully transferring the inner pattern to the outer face. The size of the pattern repeat is instrumental to the choice of shade size as making the shade at 35cm diameter rather than my standard 30cm diameter, results in the heart shaped form when viewed obliquely. Its ideal for living rooms, hallways and dining rooms. Options for a different outer face colour are also available and it's a versatile choice for both ambient and decorative lighting.
Handmade Craft Each lampshade is handmade in London using traditional making techniques. The interior pattern is aligned with precision, the lining is finished cleanly, and the structure is built to maintain its form over time. As part of a limited run, every shade carries the individuality of the maker’s hand.
